Vicryl Plus VCP276H – Absorbable antibacterial suture
Vicryl™ Plus antibacterial sutures are absorbable, braided, synthetic sutures coated with IRGACARE® MP (Triclosan), a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent used for over 50 years in professional and consumer products, with an excellent safety profile when used as directed.
Mechanism of Action
Since the occurrence of surgical site infections (SSIs) is linked, among other factors, to the formation of bacterial biofilm on the suture thread, Vicryl™ Plus sutures offer antibacterial protection that starts from within:
- They kill bacteria known to be associated with SSIs in vivo;
- They create a zone of inhibition, as demonstrated in vitro;
- Bacterial inhibition continues for 7 or more days in vitro.
Clinical Efficacy
The clinical value of triclosan-coated sutures is well-established and supported by Level 1A evidence and multiple evidence-based clinical practice guidelines. Plus sutures have been associated with a nearly 30% reduction in the risk of surgical site infection.
