Non-resorbable PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) membranes are the most documented barriers in the literature and are considered the gold standard in Bone (GBR) and Tissue (GTR) Regeneration procedures. By nature, PTFE is one of the most inert materials and is therefore used as a surgically implantable material in a multitude of applications in vascular, abdominal, gynecological, and plastic surgery. The advantages of PTFE are linked to the fact that, being non-resorbable, it maintains its barrier function unaltered until its removal and does not constitute a variable in the regenerative process; its limitation is linked to the risk of exposure (possible even with resorbable membranes) which prevents porous expanded PTFE (ePTFE) membranes from being left exposed due to bacterial penetration.
Non-porous materials, such as dense PTFE (dPTFE) membranes, provide greater bacterial protection but are more susceptible to exposure risk because soft tissue cells cannot adhere to and integrate with the material surface. The new Cytoplast® TXT hybrid technology of non-resorbable PTFE membranes is designed to optimize performance and reduce risks.
The patented Regentex™ TXT-200 surface is composed of dPTFE with hexagonal dimples that increase the material's surface area by 2.5x. This unique design allows tissue integration while remaining impermeable to bacteria and unwanted soft tissue cells. The increased surface area for improved cell adhesion can reduce the risk of membrane exposure.
The ultrastructural surface of the membrane is also characterized by the presence of grooves and fibrils (A) 1 to 3 µm in diameter that aid cell lodging (SEM 1,500 x) and by the presence of nanopores (B) less than 0.3 µm (SEM 20,000 x) that prevent the migration of bacteria and unwanted cells through the membrane but allow the diffusion of small organic molecules and oxygen, which are important for facilitating cell adhesion.
Cytoplast® membranes are available in the TXT-200 version and in the Ti-250 version (250 micron thickness) and Ti-150 version (150 micron thickness), with titanium reinforcement.
