MVG Bioactiva absorbable sponges are designed with uniform porosity and a unique interconnective structure to support rapid and effective hemostasis. Suitable for use in surgical procedures where control of capillary, venous, or arteriolar bleeding by pressure, ligation, or other conventional techniques is ineffective or impractical. It has an absorption capacity of up to 45 times its weight, is gamma-sterilized and pH neutral, which allows it to be combined with drugs or antibiotics, and is completely absorbed within four weeks.
This is a medical device widely used in oral surgery and regenerative dentistry. Its primary function is to act as a temporary scaffold and clot stabilizer.
Properties and Mechanism of Action.
The collagen used is generally of animal origin (bovine, porcine, equine) and is highly purified to eliminate any risk of immune reactions.
Rapid Hemostasis: collagen attracts and aggregates platelets, accelerating blood clot formation immediately after an extraction or surgery.
Scaffold Effect: the three-dimensional sponge structure guides the migration of stem cells and fibroblasts, promoting the formation of new tissue (granulation) and, subsequently, bone.
Chemotaxis: actively attracts cells responsible for wound healing.
Biocompatibility and Resorption: it is completely assimilated by the body. The resorption time is generally rapid, ranging from 2 to 4 weeks depending on the density of the block.
Main Clinical Applications
Collagen blocks are extremely versatile and are primarily used in these scenarios:
Post-extraction socket preservation (Socket Preservation), serving to stabilize blood within the cavity.
Management of hemorrhage and complex patients on anticoagulant and antiplatelet therapy.
Preventive protection of the sinus membrane in mini, medium, and large maxillary sinus lifts, especially in the trans-crestal technique and also in the case of small lacerations.
Coverage of palatal harvest sites, often secured with mattress sutures to protect the wound, reducing post-operative pain and accelerating re-epithelialization.
Advantages
Ease of use: It adapts perfectly to the shape of the cavity (it can be shaped or compressed).
Excellent hemostasis: Drastically reduces post-operative bleeding.
Hydrophilic: Absorbs fluids and blood instantly, swelling slightly to seal the site.
Limitations
No structural support: It has no mechanical strength and cannot support soft tissues if there is bone loss.
Rapid resorption: If a barrier that lasts for months is needed (e.g., Guided Bone Regeneration - GBR), appropriate membranes must be used.
