A resorbable hemostatic sponge made from a neutral, water-insoluble purified gelatin foam. Spongostan adheres to the bleeding surface and absorbs approximately 45 times its weight in liquid. Uniformly porous, it induces platelet aggregation, thus activating coagulation. The fibrin network then stops bleeding. Spongostan is resorbed within 3-5 weeks.
