What is the Prion Test? The Prion Test is not a functional test (like the Helix Test, Bowie & Dick, and Vacuum Test), but rather a control test performed during the sterilization cycle to verify that certain sterilization parameters have been achieved.
The use of the prion cycle and its monitoring through Prion Test, although not legally required in many countries, is a good practice that is strongly recommended, especially if the patient's history reveals the possibility of contact with the prion of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.
The Prion test is a specific test used to assess whether the instruments and materials being treated have been exposed to the specific sterilization cycle, in order to prevent potential contamination and comply with the guidelines on sterilization activity.
Autoclaves and prion cycle: A prion sterilization cycle generally has an exposure to the sterilization temperature of about 14 minutes longer than the normal cycle at 134°C. At the end of the cycle, the Prion Test, placed inside the chamber, can be used to verify that the sterilization conditions have been reached and maintained for the time adequate to destroy the prions.
