Biofilm is a complex aggregation of microorganisms in an adhesive and protective matrix.
Biofilm formation begins with the attachment of free-floating microorganisms to a surface.
When a group of bacteria accumulates on a surface and reaches a particular cell density, it begins to secrete a polymeric substance composed of polysaccharides, proteins, and DNA, which, by associating with free water molecules in the surrounding environment, forms a matrix in which bacterial cells are strongly rooted.
This matrix protects the cells and facilitates the supply of nutrients through water channels that help distribute nutrients and signal molecules. Similarly, these channels convey waste products and any exotoxins to the periphery. The consequence of the presence of the matrix is the almost impossibility of removing the biofilm from a contaminated root and implant surface with mechanical procedures alone. Furthermore, it is the presence of this matrix that increases the resistance of bacteria to both topical and systemic disinfectants and antibiotics.

What is HybenX and how does it work?
HybenX is an opaque, purplish semi-viscous liquid for topical use, to be applied locally in the oral cavity. HybenX contains sulfonated phenolic compounds and sulfuric acid in aqueous solution.
HybenX is a Class 1 medical device.
HybenX uses the hygroscopic characteristic of the sulfur present in the solution to rapidly and effectively absorb the water contained in the biofilm, drying it out. Without water, the organic polymers that form the backbone of the biofilm matrix precipitate.
The structure of the entire biofilm simply collapses, and the biofilm detaches from the tooth surfaces and tissues. The coagulated biofilm is easily rinsed away by irrigation and evacuated with high-speed aspiration.
