When cemented on the lingual surface of the upper incisors, its low profile causes less interference with the lower incisors. Being a soft wire, it is easy to adapt and prevents the tooth movement that occurs with active wires.

It is also used to maintain the closure of diastemas, to maintain difficult extraction sites, and to create splints on teeth with compromised periodontal status.
