OpalDam is a methacrylate-based material designed to protect the tissues surrounding the teeth being whitened. When whitening a single tooth, OpalDam can also be used to cover adjacent teeth. Being a light-curing and light-reflecting material, it protects soft tissue from the heat of the light. A few seconds of light curing (10–20 seconds) per tooth is sufficient. Dry the gums thoroughly before applying OpalDam.

OpalDam is available in two colors: bright white and bright green. OpalDam Green provides a sharper contrast between gums and teeth and is included in the Opalescence Boost kit.

OpalDam can also be used to protect hard and soft tissue during procedures such as sandblasting or strong acid etching (e.g., porcelain repair). It can also be used to seal/secure a rubber dam.
