Biofilm is a complex aggregation of microorganisms in an adhesive and protective matrix.
The formation of a biofilm begins with the anchoring of free-floating microorganisms to a surface.
When a group of bacteria accumulates on a surface and reaches a particular cell density, it begins to secrete a polymeric substance composed of polysaccharides, proteins and DNA, which, by associating with free water molecules in the surrounding environment, gives rise to a matrix in which the bacterial cells are strongly rooted.
This matrix protects cells and facilitates the supply of nutrients through water channels that help distribute nutrients and signaling molecules. Likewise, these canaliculi convey waste products and possible exotoxins to the periphery. The presence of the matrix makes it nearly impossible to remove biofilm from a contaminated root or implant surface using mechanical procedures alone. Furthermore, the presence of this matrix increases bacterial resistance to both topical and systemic disinfectants and antibiotics.

What is HybenX and how does it work?
HybenX is a semi-viscous, opaque, purple liquid for topical use, applied locally in the oral cavity. HybenX contains sulfonated phenolic compounds and sulfuric acid in an aqueous solution.
HynenX is a Class 1 medical device.
HybenX uses the hygroscopic properties of sulfur in solution to quickly and effectively absorb water from biofilms, drying them. Without water, the organic polymers that form the backbone of the biofilm matrix precipitate.
The entire biofilm structure simply collapses, and the biofilm detaches from the tooth surfaces and tissues. The coagulated biofilm is easily rinsed away with irrigation and evacuated with high-speed suction.
