With a hammer: Deformed clasps, fractures in resin prostheses, chipped teeth, and deformed bridges are some of the various damages caused by using a hammer. Uncontrolled shock waves destroy the homogeneous structure. Even more dangerous is to tap directly on the metal sprue, as this directly damages the object. Compared to the precautions taken for the work previously performed, this treatment is very rough.
With deflasking pliers: By cutting, the pliers act as a wedge in the investment or plaster. This displacement of the material is completely transmitted to the casting, causing tension and distortion. For example, a resin prosthesis can easily break. Teeth are constantly at risk of breaking.
Conclusion: Both methods act not only on the investment but equally on the casting. Hard-to-reach areas are not accessed. Deflasking with an air chisel is the most suitable method because it effectively acts only on the bulk material.
