Legionella is a lung infection caused by a microorganism (Legionella pps) that thrives in moist environments, particularly stagnant water systems. In the dental field, it can be found in dental unit water lines, both in sprays released by caudate instruments and within the biofilm that forms in the water circuit. The risk of Legionella infection during dental treatments is essentially related to the inhalation of contaminated aerosols. This is particularly important for immunocompromised individuals. During dental use, biofilm blocks laden with bacteria and Legionella break off and are carried, via sprays, into the environment and the patient's oral cavity.
LEGIONELLA and Legislative Decree 81/2008
Prevention and surveillance in living and working environments.
Finally, a noteworthy section of the recent document deals in detail with the risk of legionellosis associated with professional activities. It is recalled that: "As reported in Legislative Decree 81/2008 and subsequent amendments and additions, the risk of exposure to Legionella in any work environment requires the implementation of all appropriate safety measures to carry out the most comprehensive prevention and protection activity for all subjects present, considering that in Title X of the aforementioned Legislative Decree 81/2008 Legionella is classified as a group 2 pathogen." The safety measures must be implemented following the risk assessment process, also indicated in the aforementioned Title X and must be implemented in compliance with the provisions of Title I (of the aforementioned Legislative Decree) referring to what is reported in Articles 15 (general protection measures) and 18 (employer's obligations).
WATER SAFETY: NO LEGIONELLA THANKS
WATER SAFETY devices are based on an innovative double-wall hollow microfiltration technique. The large filtering surface ensures a long life for the products used. The double-wall filter ensures sterile filtration, maintaining the same properties as the water. The WATER SAFETY system consists of a pre-filter, to eliminate any impurities present in the water, plus the reference filter. Thanks to its compact size, it can be easily positioned inside any dental unit. All filters are 100% tested to maintain the integrity and tightness of the membranes, thus guaranteeing consistent results in terms of operational efficiency. WATER SAFETY devices are built with special materials that allow physical performance to remain unchanged, even in the presence of high-temperature and chlorinated water. The filters have a lifespan of approximately 5,000 hours, but should still be replaced at least once a year.
