What is CMD?
The teeth of the upper and lower jaws, the chewing muscles, the temporomandibular joint, and the muscle groups of the head and neck are collectively called the craniomandibular system. If there is an imbalance between these individual components, there is a slight likelihood of craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD).
The causes of craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD) are multifactorial and affect a constantly growing group of patients. Stress, occlusion disorders, and impairment of the masticatory muscles and temporomandibular joints exacerbate symptoms such as pain and tension in the entire musculature.
Symptoms to recognize CMD:
- Temporomandibular joint pain
- Teeth grinding (bruxism)
- Cracking, grinding, and pain in the jaw joint
- Headaches and migraines
- Tension in the neck, back and shoulders
- Difficulty swallowing
